Preparing for Your First Energy Healing Session

How to prepare for your first Sekhem energy healing session with Jason Donaldson, from what to eat beforehand to what the work often starts before you arrive.

First sessions bring up a lot of the same questions. What do I need to do beforehand? Will I feel something? What if nothing happens? I want to walk through what actually helps, without overpromising what a first session will look like, because it's genuinely different for everyone.

The work often starts before you arrive

This surprises people, but the session doesn't begin the moment you sit down with me. Once you've booked, the work often starts then. Dreams can become more vivid. Meaningful coincidences or interactions sometimes show up in the days leading in. I'd encourage you to notice this window rather than dismiss it as unrelated. Keep a small note somewhere, your phone, a notebook, of anything that feels significant between booking and your appointment. It can become useful material once we sit down together.

What to do the day of your session

Eat and drink lightly in the hour before your session. A heavy meal pulls energy into digestion right when your body wants to settle into deep relaxation, and being overly hungry or under-hydrated can leave you jittery instead of grounded. Light is the operative word, not empty. Wear something comfortable. If you're joining online, find a quiet space where you can lie down undisturbed for the full ninety minutes, somewhere you won't be interrupted by a phone, a pet, or a delivery at the door.

You don't need to prepare a list of questions

Some people come in with a page of specific questions they want answered. That's fine if it helps you feel oriented, but it's not required. A Sekhem session isn't structured like an interview. We'll sit down and connect first, talk through whatever's come up since you booked, and set an intention together. If you don't have a clear question yet, that's a completely normal place to start from. Often the session itself clarifies what you actually needed to ask.

What actually happens once we begin

After we set intention, we move into grounding, gentle guidance that brings you into the present moment, into the body, into deep relaxation. From there the energy is channeled, hands over the body, often with sound and vibration, sage, cedar, and Egyptian oils as part of the work. I'm checking in constantly with what's coming through, tracking impressions, sometimes glimpses of past lives, sometimes a clearer sense of what needs attention. You don't need to do anything active during this part. Your job is simply to receive and let your body settle into it.

Don't expect a specific kind of experience

This is maybe the most important thing I can tell a first-time client. Some people feel a strong, obvious shift during the session itself, warmth, tingling, emotional release, vivid imagery. Others feel very little in the moment and notice the effects unfold over the following days through dreams, mood, or how situations in their life start to move. Neither response means the session did or didn't work. Come without a fixed expectation of what you're supposed to feel, and let whatever actually happens be what happens.

After the session

Once I gently bring you back, there's time to journal whatever came through internally before we debrief together. I'll share what I received on my end, and you're welcome to share anything that surfaced for you, though you're never required to. We'll often pull a card or two for confirmation and to support whatever's continuing to move. The work often continues for a couple of days or even a week afterward, so give yourself some room in the days following, rather than expecting everything to resolve in the ninety minutes itself.

If this is also your first time hearing about Sekhem

If you're newer to the idea of Sekhem specifically, the Sekhem energy healing page and the Sekhem session walkthrough go into more depth on what the practice is and how a full session unfolds. If you came here through a search for Reiki, it's worth reading why I practice Sekhem, not Reiki, since they're related but not identical traditions.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat before my first session?

Eat and drink lightly in the hour beforehand. Avoid a heavy meal right before, and avoid coming in overly hungry or dehydrated either. Light, not empty, is the goal.

Do I need to know anything about Sekhem before I book?

No. Many first-time clients come in with no prior knowledge, and that's completely fine. We'll cover what you need to know as part of the session itself.

What if I don't feel anything during the session?

That's normal for some people, and it doesn't mean nothing happened. Many clients notice the effects unfold over the following days through dreams, mood, or shifts in how situations in their life move, rather than during the session itself.

Can I ask questions during the session?

Yes. We open with time to connect and share whatever's come up since booking, and we debrief together afterward, which is a natural space for your questions. The middle portion of the session is more about receiving than talking.

How soon after booking should I expect things to start shifting?

Often right away. The work frequently starts as soon as you book, showing up in dreams or meaningful moments in the days leading into your appointment, so it's worth paying attention from the moment you schedule, not just the day of.

Come as you are, we'll take it from there.
