How to Start Connecting with Spirit Guides

A practical, grounded way to start connecting with your spirit guides, from someone who has felt his guides his whole life and teaches others to do the same.

I've felt my guides my whole life. That's not a special gift reserved for a few people. Every one of us has guides with us, always there, rooting us on. The gap isn't whether you have them. It's whether you've built the quiet, and the trust, to notice what they're already saying.

I want to walk through how I actually teach people to start this, not the dramatic version where a guide shows up in a vision on day one, but the slower, more honest version that actually works.

Start with the felt sense, not the vision

Most people expect connecting with a guide to look like a movie: a glowing figure, a clear voice, unmistakable proof. That's rare, and chasing it usually blocks the subtler thing that's already happening. What I teach in spirit guidance mentoring is learning to tune into the felt sense first, a kind of inner witness, a still point of power that's present no matter what's happening around you.

Before you look for a guide's voice, practice noticing your own body's signal system. A tightening. A warmth. A sudden calm in the middle of a hard conversation. These are often the first language guidance uses, long before anything that sounds like words.

Guides meet the energy you bring

Here's something I learned directly, not from a book. Years ago I started sensing Anubis around me during my morning Qigong practice. No dramatic message, just a presence, steady, watching, neutral. I didn't understand it at first and it took time, and guidance from my own teacher, before I could receive it without fear.

What I found is that these energies, and I'd guess this is true of most guidance, meet whatever you bring to them. When I approached with fear, things felt intense and heavy. When I came back to a place of neutrality and love, the same presence would shift into something gentler. Your guides aren't testing you to see if you're worthy. They're reflecting back the state you're actually in.

Your thoughts are felt, not just thought

One thing I tell people who are starting to meditate or do energy work regularly: you have to watch what you're thinking, because it's felt by others, not just by you. Once you're more open, a passing judgmental thought about someone isn't neutral anymore. It moves. If you add emotion to it, it moves faster and further.

This matters for guide connection because the same channel that carries your guidance outward also carries whatever you're holding about other people, or about yourself. Cleaning that channel, through something as simple as noticing when you've slipped into harsh judgment and consciously softening it, is part of what makes the guidance come through clearer.

A simple daily practice to start

You don't need a special ceremony to begin. Here's what I'd suggest if you're starting from zero:

  1. Sit quietly for five minutes, once a day, same time if you can manage it.
  2. Drop your attention into your chest, into your heart space, rather than your head.
  3. Silently or out loud, invite your guides and ancestors in, just a simple welcome.
  4. Notice whatever shows up, a word, an image, a feeling, a memory, without judging whether it's "real" guidance or just your imagination.
  5. Write it down afterward, even one line.

Do this for two or three weeks before deciding whether it's working. Guidance tends to build trust slowly, the way a friendship does.

What guided breathwork and energy sessions add

In Galactic Breathing, we build toward states where guides and ancestors are consciously invited in, through breath, movement, and heart centered energy work. Many people who've never consciously felt a guide before have their first clear experience of one during the third round of breath, when the body settles into a deeper, more open state.

In Sekhem sessions, I often receive impressions of guides or the Neteru, the Egyptian archetypal energies, on a client's behalf, then share what came through during the debrief. For some people, that's the first time anyone has named what they've been half sensing on their own for years.

Signs you're already connecting, even if you don't call it that

A lot of people are already in contact with their guides and just don't have language for it. Watch for:

  • A strong hunch that turned out right, one you can't explain logically.
  • A specific song, phrase, or animal that keeps showing up at meaningful moments.
  • Dreams involving someone who has passed, that feel different in texture from ordinary dreams.
  • A sudden calm or clarity in a moment of fear, that didn't come from reasoning your way there.

None of these need to be dramatic to count. The quiet, repeated ones are usually more reliable than the one big dramatic experience everyone hopes for.

When to get outside support

Some people can build this connection alone with patience and practice. Others move faster with someone alongside them who already knows the terrain. That's what spirit guidance mentoring is for: weekly sessions where I serve as an external guide to help you remember your own internal guidance, rather than depending on me to interpret it for you forever.

If you're not sure which path fits, a tarot and energy signature reading is often a gentler starting point. It can surface which guides or energies are already close to you, in a single session, before you commit to an ongoing practice.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any special ability to connect with a spirit guide?

No. Every one of us has guides with us already. What usually needs developing isn't the connection itself but the quiet and the trust to notice it.

How long does it take to start sensing a guide?

It varies. Some people notice something in the first week of practice. For others it takes a few months of consistent quiet time. Neither pace means anything about whether it's working.

What if what I'm sensing feels scary or heavy?

Come back to neutral, then to love, as best you can. In my own experience, energies that felt intense softened once I stopped meeting them with fear. If something feels consistently heavy or frightening, bring it to a session so we can work with it directly.

Can breathwork or energy healing help me connect with guides faster?

Many people do report stronger contact with guides during and after Galactic Breathing or Sekhem sessions. The deep relaxation and heart centered focus tend to open that channel more than daily life usually allows.

Is this the same as being a starseed?

Not exactly, though they're related. Starseed origin touches on your soul's deeper cosmic lineage, while guide connection is about the ongoing relationship with the beings supporting you now. You can read more in the starseed section if that's where your curiosity is pointing.
