What Hawai'i Teaches About Energy and Healing

Jason Donaldson on what living and practicing on Hawai'i Island for over a decade has taught him about energy work, ho'oponopono, and the land itself.

I've been offering sessions, groups, workshops and rite of passage ceremonies on the Big Island for over ten years, and I live and work in Hawaiian Paradise Park on the Puna side. Living here has shaped how I understand and practice energy work in ways I don't think I'd have arrived at anywhere else.

The land itself is alive in a way you can't ignore

Hawai'i Island is still being formed. The volcano is active, the coastline changes, land is literally being created a few miles from where I hold sessions. You can't practice energy work here for long without that reality getting into your bones. It's hard to treat the earth as a passive backdrop when you live somewhere that keeps reminding you it's a living, active process, still becoming what it's going to be. That awareness shapes how I talk about the earth chakra in Sekhem sessions, the grounding energy about twelve inches below the feet. It's not an abstract concept for me. It's the ground I actually stand on.

Ho'oponopono taught me something Sekhem training alone didn't

Ho'oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice, more than a technique really, a way of making things right. There's a self-identity version of it I use regularly, asking forgiveness of the universe and everything around me for holding onto judgment or believing something is wrong with a person or a situation. I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you. It sounds simple written out like that, but it's changed how I catch myself mid-judgment and bring myself back.

This matters for energy work specifically because if you spend a lot of time doing this kind of work, meditating deeply, holding space for others, you become more sensitive to your own thoughts and where they go. What you think about someone, especially with emotion attached, moves. Ho'oponopono gave me a direct, immediate tool for cleaning that up in myself before it becomes something I'm carrying into a session with a client. I don't think I would have found a practice this precise and this practical anywhere else.

The community here shaped Galactic Breathing directly

I created Galactic Breathing here, running it weekly, sometimes twice a week, for over two years, with people coming from all over the world through an Airbnb experience on the island. Everyone arrived at a different level of health, fitness and experience with breathwork. That range of people, all in one room or one group, is exactly why the practice is built the way it is: gradual, in three rounds, gentle by default, with the first round enough for most people. Hawai'i's particular mix of tourists, transplants, longtime residents and visiting seekers built that structure into the modality itself, out of necessity, not theory.

Puna is not the tourist version of this island

A lot of people picture the resort side of Hawai'i when they think of the islands. Hilo and the Puna district, where I live, are a different world: rainforest, working towns, a slower and rawer relationship with the land than the west side resorts. That difference matters for the kind of work I do. This isn't spa energy work squeezed between pool time. It's grounded in towns where people actually live their whole lives, which shapes the kind of client who finds their way to me and the kind of session that tends to happen here.

What I've learned about balance from living somewhere this intense

An active volcano, frequent rain, real isolation on parts of the island, it teaches you something about balance that's hard to learn intellectually. Sekhem's whole orientation, as I understand and practice it, is toward finding balance, harmony between fire and water, between the grounded and the cosmic. Living somewhere where fire and water are not metaphors, where they're the literal geology outside my window, has made that orientation feel less like a spiritual concept and more like a description of how things actually work here.

If you're not on the island

Most of what I've described isn't something you need to physically visit Hawai'i to access. I offer online sessions worldwide, and the land's influence comes through in how I hold a session regardless of where you're joining from. But if you're ever on Hawai'i Island, an in-person Sekhem energy healing or Galactic Breathing session on the island carries something the online version can point toward but can't fully replicate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in Hawai'i to benefit from this work?

No. I offer sessions online worldwide, and the core practices, Sekhem, Galactic Breathing, tarot and mentoring, translate fully to a virtual setting. The island shapes how I practice, but it's not a requirement for the work itself.

What is ho'oponopono and is it part of every session?

Ho'oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian practice of making things right, and I use a self-identity version of it in my own life and preparation. It's not a formal, separate module in every client session, but its orientation toward clearing judgment and returning to love runs through how I hold the space.

Why are you on the rainforest side rather than the resort areas?

That's simply where I live and where my practice is rooted, on the rainforest side of the island rather than the resort coast. It shapes the kind of work I offer and the community I'm part of.

How did living on the Big Island influence Galactic Breathing specifically?

Running the ceremony weekly for over two years with a wide range of visitors, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners, is exactly why it's structured in gradual, optional rounds. The island's mix of people built that structure directly into the practice.
