Breathwork Techniques for Better Sleep

Breathwork for sleep uses guided breath, movement and a calm nervous system reset. Learn how Galactic Breathing sessions on the Big Island can help.

If you lie awake running the day back through your head, the problem usually isn't the mind. It's a nervous system that never got the signal to stand down. Breathwork for sleep works by using the breath itself, long exhales, held pauses, a slower rhythm, to tell the body it's safe to rest. Jason Donaldson offers Galactic Breathing sessions online, and in person by request, built around that exact shift.

Why breath affects sleep

Breathing is one of the only nervous system functions you can run on autopilot or take over by hand. A long, slow exhale activates the parasympathetic branch of the nervous system, the part responsible for rest and digestion. Short, shallow breathing does the opposite: it keeps the body scanning for threat, which is exactly what insomnia feels like from the inside. You're tired and wired at the same time. Working with the breath, even for a few minutes, gives the body a different set of instructions.

This is general nervous system physiology, well established and not specific to any one technique. What Galactic Breathing adds is structure, guidance and enough time in the body to actually let the shift happen instead of rushing it.

What a Galactic Breathing session looks like

A private session runs 90 minutes, 222 dollars, in person or online. It opens with settling in and a light movement practice, usually Qigong, to loosen the body before you lie down. From there, a guided meditation sets intention, followed by heart centered energy work where you're invited to connect with guides or ancestors if that's part of your path. Then three rounds of breath. Each round ends with an inhale, a hold, a release, and rest. "The first round is all most people will need," Jason says. The second and third rounds build intensity for those who want to go deeper, where altered states become more common. After the breathing, there's a longer pause, often with channeled messages, a grounded return, and time to integrate and share what came up.

It's gentle. No screaming, no forcing anything. Eat and drink lightly for an hour before your session so your body isn't working on digestion while it's working on release.

Why breathwork can help when sleep has been hard to reach

A lot of people carry the day in their chest and shoulders without noticing it until they try to lie still. Breathwork gives that tension somewhere to go before bedtime instead of after the lights are off. Clients have described feeling more settled in the body, less mentally wired, and better able to drop into rest following a session. This is a complementary practice, not a treatment for a sleep disorder, and it works alongside whatever else you're already doing for rest, not instead of it.

If sleeplessness is tied up with anxiety that follows you through the day, the breathwork for anxiety page covers that connection directly. If sleep has become part of a bigger pattern of exhaustion, breathwork for burnout may be the closer fit.

What to expect afterward

Most people feel loose and quiet after a session, sometimes a little tired in a good way, sometimes lit up and clear. Integration continues for a day or two as the nervous system settles into the new pattern. Some people notice their sleep shifts that same night. For others it takes a session or two before the body trusts the new rhythm enough to let go at bedtime.

Building a simple wind-down practice

Beyond a full session, breath can become a short, repeatable ritual before bed. A few minutes of slower, longer exhales while lying in the dark does some of the same work as a full ceremony, at a smaller scale. It won't replace the depth of a guided 90 minute session, especially the energy work and the third round's altered state, but it gives the body a nightly cue that the day is over. Many clients build this habit after their first session with Jason, using what they learned in the room as their own tool at home.

Why sleep problems often need more than a technique

Sleeplessness that's been going on for months or years is rarely just a breathing problem. It's often tangled with an overactive mind, unresolved tension from the day, or a body that's forgotten what rest actually feels like. Breathwork addresses the physiological piece directly, but if what's keeping you up is bigger than a single habit, a deeper look might be useful. Spirit Guidance Mentoring works with the patterns underneath a restless mind on an ongoing weekly basis, which can complement what a single breathwork session starts.

A note on consistency

One session can shift a night or two. A pattern of poor sleep built over years usually responds better to a few sessions spaced out, paired with whatever else supports your rest: consistent sleep and wake times, less screen time before bed, a cooler room. Jason will talk through what pacing makes sense for you at booking.

Frequently asked questions

Can breathwork actually help me fall asleep faster?

Many people notice they fall asleep more easily after working with breath and nervous system regulation, since the practice is built to move the body out of an alert state and into rest. Results vary by person, and breathwork complements, rather than replaces, care for a diagnosed sleep condition.

Is this the same as a basic breathing exercise I could do at home?

Galactic Breathing goes further than a simple breathing exercise. It's a guided 90 minute ceremony with movement, meditation, energy work and three structured rounds of breath, with Jason present the whole time to help you stay in a calm, regulated space.

Do I need experience with breathwork or meditation first?

No. The session is built as a gradual process so it works for complete beginners as well as people with years of practice. Round one is designed to be accessible and gentle regardless of your starting point.

Should I do this instead of seeing a doctor about my insomnia?

No. If sleep problems are persistent, talk to a medical provider. Breathwork can support and complement that care, and Jason will never suggest it replace medical evaluation for a sleep disorder.

What should I do before my session to prepare?

Eat and drink lightly in the hour before your session. Wear comfortable clothes, and if you're joining online, find a quiet space where you can lie down undisturbed for the full 90 minutes.

Is breathwork safe if sleeplessness is connected to anxiety or depression?

Breathwork can complement care for anxiety or depression, but it does not replace medical or mental health treatment. If sleeplessness is part of a larger struggle, please also see a qualified provider, and if you are in crisis, call 988 in the US.

Come as you are. We'll meet your body where it's at.
