Empath Overwhelm, Support for Highly Sensitive People

Empath overwhelm support from Jason Donaldson, who lived this himself. Sekhem energy healing and Spirit Guidance Mentoring for highly sensitive people.

Walking into a crowded room and feeling everyone else's mood before you feel your own. Absorbing tension that isn't yours and carrying it home. Needing hours alone just to feel like yourself again. If this is familiar, you already know the cost of being wired this way. Jason Donaldson works with highly sensitive people and empaths from direct, personal experience, not just professional training.

This was Jason's own story first

"From an early age Jason felt a connection to the world around him in a very powerful and often overwhelming way," his own account reads. "An extreme sensitivity and inner vision had him withdraw from people and himself." That withdrawal wasn't a character flaw, it was a nervous system trying to protect itself from more input than it knew how to process. He explored the wrong ways to cope through his teens and young adult years, until a dark night of the soul during his Saturn return sent him to the Arizona desert to train with his first metaphysics teacher. What followed were years of trying to fix himself, until he landed on the truth he now works from: we are already whole and complete. He isn't teaching empath overwhelm from a textbook. He lived inside it.

What actually helps

Two paths tend to work together here. Sekhem Energy Healing addresses the overwhelm somatically: a 90 minute session, 222 dollars, working through the earth chakra to help an overloaded, ungrounded system settle back into the body. Jason primarily practices Sekhem, an older Egyptian-lineage tradition related to Reiki, not Reiki itself; the Sekhem vs Reiki page explains that distinction if you're comparing options. Sessions involve grounding, channeled energy work, sound and Egyptian oils, closing with journaling and a debrief.

Spirit Guidance Mentoring addresses the pattern underneath the overwhelm: weekly, one hour sessions built around the felt sense in the body and what Jason calls the inner witness, a still point of power that can hold steady even when everything around you is loud. For a highly sensitive person, learning to locate that still point, rather than constantly absorbing everyone else's, is often the real work.

Why sensitivity isn't the problem

A lot of empaths spend years trying to become less sensitive, as though the sensitivity itself were the malfunction. Jason's approach treats it differently: the sensitivity is real and it's not going away, so the work is building the capacity to hold it without being flooded by it. That's a different goal than numbing out or armoring up, and it tends to hold up better over time.

If what you're noticing feels less like general sensitivity and more like an active spiritual opening, the spiritual awakening support page covers that adjacent territory. If the overwhelm is showing up mostly as chronic tension in the body, energy healing for chronic stress may be the more direct fit.

What tends to shift

People don't usually leave this work less sensitive. They leave with more room around the sensitivity: able to feel a crowded room without absorbing it whole, able to care about someone without carrying their entire emotional weight home. That's a more livable version of the same gift, not a different person altogether.

Frequently asked questions

Is being an empath a real thing, or is it just anxiety?

They can overlap, and it's not always easy to separate one from the other. This work addresses both the felt, energetic side of sensitivity and, through mentoring, the thought patterns that can amplify it. If anxiety is the dominant experience, energy healing for anxiety may speak to that more directly.

How is a Sekhem session different from just resting or being alone?

Rest helps, but Sekhem works actively with the body's energy and grounding, which many highly sensitive people find goes further than rest alone in helping an overloaded system settle.

Should I start with a session or with weekly mentoring?

Either is a reasonable entry point. A single Sekhem session gives you a felt sense of the somatic side of this work. Weekly mentoring is better suited if you want ongoing support in changing the underlying pattern.

Can empath overwhelm become a mental health concern?

Yes, if it's contributing to significant anxiety, depression or an inability to function. This work is complementary support, not a substitute for medical or mental health care. If you're in crisis, call 988 in the US.

Does Jason really understand this from experience, or is this just marketing language?

His own bio describes exactly this pattern: early overwhelming sensitivity, withdrawal, years of difficulty, and an eventual path through it via training and practice starting in his early twenties. It's the foundation of how he works with clients now.

Common signs people bring to this work

Needing significant alone time to recover after ordinary social events. Physically feeling a room's mood shift before anyone says anything. Taking on responsibility for other people's emotions without being asked to. Getting overwhelmed by noise, light or crowds in ways that seem disproportionate to people around you. None of these are flaws to fix. They're signs of a nervous system picking up more signal than average, and the work here is building capacity to hold that signal, not shutting it off.

Why boundaries alone often aren't enough

A lot of empath advice stops at boundaries: say no more, protect your energy, limit your exposure. Boundaries matter, but for many highly sensitive people they only address the surface. The deeper work is building an internal sense of groundedness strong enough that you're not as dependent on controlling your environment in the first place. That's what Sekhem's earth chakra work and the felt sense practice in Spirit Guidance Mentoring are both aiming at, a more durable form of steadiness than avoidance alone can offer.

Sekhem or weekly mentoring, whichever fits where you're at.
