Star Family vs Soul Family: What's the Difference?

Star family and soul family are related but different ideas in starseed teachings. Jason Donaldson explains how each shows up in his sessions.

Star family and soul family sound like they should mean the same thing. In starseed teachings they don't, and the distinction matters when you're trying to make sense of the guides, ancestors, and relationships that show up in a reading or a healing session.

What star family means

Star family refers to the nonphysical beings, guides, and archetypal energies connected to a soul's origin beyond this single human life. In Jason's Sekhem work, this often shows up as the Neteru, the Egyptian gods and goddesses he describes as cosmic archetypal energies rather than literal deities: Horus the falcon, Sekhmet the lion, Thoth the ibis, Anubis as way-shower of the inner world. He also names Syrians, Palladians, and Orion energy as part of this same territory. "I am merely the channel," Jason says of Sekhem sessions. "They do the work." Star family, in this frame, is less about bloodline and more about which cosmic energy or archetype a soul is aligned with and continues to draw support from.

What soul family means

Soul family is closer to what most people mean by the term "found family," but with a spiritual weight to it. These are the people, sometimes strangers who become fast friends, sometimes actual blood relatives, who a soul seems to keep encountering across different circumstances or, in starseed teachings, across different lifetimes. Soul family relationships often carry an unusual intensity: instant recognition, deep comfort, or sometimes deep friction that feels older than the current relationship itself.

How they show up differently in a session

During a tarot and energy signature reading, Jason tunes into your galactic self, the essence that carries through every lifetime. Sometimes loved ones come through directly, working as a medium alongside the cards. That's soul family territory: specific people, specific relationships, specific messages.

Star family tends to surface more in Sekhem energy healing, where the Neteru or other cosmic archetypal energies show up as part of the channeled work itself, not as messages from a person but as the energy doing the work. A session might bring through Horus, or Sekhmet, or a sense of Orion energy, depending on what the client needs that day.

A note on friction, not just closeness

Not every soul family connection feels good. Some of the most charged relationships in a person's life, the ones that trigger old wounds fastest, are described in this framework as soul family too, sometimes specifically because the friction is doing work that comfort alone couldn't do. Jason's approach to this kind of relationship isn't to explain it away but to help a client stay grounded enough to learn what it's there to teach, rather than simply enduring it or cutting it off reflexively.

Why the distinction matters

If you're trying to understand a specific relationship in your life, especially one that feels unusually charged, that's more likely soul family work, and a soul origin reading or tarot session is the more direct path. If you're trying to understand your own deeper origin, your archetypal nature, or the guides supporting your energy work itself, that's star family territory, more squarely Sekhem's domain.

They aren't mutually exclusive. A single reading can touch both: your galactic self (closer to star family, your essence and origin) and specific people in your life (soul family). See what a lightworker is for a related term that overlaps with both categories.

A practical way to tell the two apart in your own life

If you're trying to sort this out on your own before booking anything, ask yourself two separate questions. First: is there a specific person, living or passed, that this feeling attaches to? If yes, you're likely looking at soul family. Second: does the feeling attach to something less personal, more like an energy, a symbol, or a sense of guidance that doesn't have a face? That's closer to star family. Most people carry both, often without ever separating them, and a reading or healing session can name which is which when it matters.

If this is the first time you've encountered these terms, start with what a starseed is or 12 signs you might be a starseed. If you're ready to explore your own star and soul connections directly, book a soul origin reading or a Sekhem energy healing session. For ongoing support making sense of what surfaces, Spirit Guidance Mentoring is built for that.

Frequently asked questions

Can my star family and soul family be the same beings?

Usually not directly, though they can be related. Star family tends to be nonphysical, archetypal, and connected to origin. Soul family tends to be physical people you encounter in this and other lifetimes.

How do I know if someone in my life is soul family?

There's no test for it. People often describe an intensity, whether closeness or friction, that feels disproportionate to how long they've actually known each other. A reading can sometimes clarify this, but it isn't required to trust what you're already sensing.

Is star family the same as guides?

Related but not identical. Guides can be part of your star family, but star family in Jason's work leans toward the Neteru and cosmic archetypal energies specifically, which function differently from a single personal guide.

Does everyone have both a star family and a soul family?

In starseed teachings, most people are understood to have both, though how present or active either feels varies a great deal from person to person and season to season of life.

Where do I start if I want to understand mine?

A soul origin reading is the most direct entry point, since it's built specifically around tuning into your galactic self and what comes through around it.
